The new MEL 80 is the 5th generation laser. It is very fast with all the technology of Carl Zeiss Meditec involved in this refractive laser system. Eyetech Lasik Clinic was the first in North America to have this laser installed.
Now the MEL 80 is the only laser in Manitoba equipped to do LBV or Laser Blended Vision to correct both distance and near vision (especially useful if are wearing bifocal or multifocals in your eyeglasses)
The new MEL 80 is super fast, it shortens surgery times remarkably. This adds comfort to the patient and lessens the anxiety. Patients' stress is relieved because they only need to concentrate for a few seconds on the fixation light the heat-optimized distribution of the laser firing pattern protects the tissue despite the high speed of laser treatment.
MEL 80 has a new ultra-fast Eyetracker. Your correction will be placed very precisely without dilating your pupil. This "tracks" your eye 250 times a second. Even if you can move your eyes 250 times a second the fast tracking combined with the fast delivery of the laser (250 times/second) the correction is perfectly and precisely done
The new MEL 80 has a very small spot of only 0.7mm with true Gaussian beam profile.(compare with Visx 4.5mm average spot size and Bausch & Lomb 217 laser 2.0 mm). This allows finest corrections even of higher order aberrations without losing the benefit of smooth operated surface. MEL 80 incorporates treatment optimizing tools e.g. improving vision outcome under dim light and at night. It also takes less tissue to do the same correction than other previous lasers.
With unique, patented technology, the MEL 80 is able to keep the tip of its laser at a specific distance from the eye at all times. This allows for better results and more precise ablation.
While your procedure is being performed, the MEL 80 is constantly monitoring the amount of energy being delivered to your eye. This means there are fewer fluctuations and less chance for unsatisfactory results.
Some clinics don't do the real "Advanced Custom Wavefront Lasik" for about 92% of their patients but do "Tissue saving" Zyoptix treatment. In "tissue saving" treatment there is no "custom" treatment. For example a -3.0 tissue saving correction is the same treatment for every one like a -3.0 correction glasses or contacts. The correction is exactly like what was available before the wavefront technologies was introduced except the amount of tissue removed is slightly less than regular treatment!
At Eyetech almost 100 % of our patients get the real custom wavefront correction. Only extreme corrections outside the parameters for custom wavefront correction get the tissue saving treatment. Even these extreme corrections get the custom wavefront treatment during enhancement if needed.

The MEL 80 has improved software easily uploading and entering data. Of course, the parameters are customized to your individual eye. The "aberration smart" correction keeps the spherical contour of the cornea. The "tissue saving" correction helps to achieve the full correction with the least amount of tissue removal which is especially helpful to do high corrections. The CRS master (Customized Refractive Surgery) translates the custom wavefront analysis of your eye prescription to give you the most elaborate and precise correction in the industry.
LBV or Laser Blended Vision software is the latest adition to this laser. Eyetech is the first in Manitoba to offer this option to patients wearing Bifocals or multifocals so they can see far and see closeup as well without any glasses. Other lasers do not have this capability
