Orbscan II
Only 5% of laser eye surgery providers like Eyetech
Lasik Clinic use an Orbscan that measures both
front and back corneal surfaces. This gives a complete
assessment of the cornea. The other 95% of laser eye
surgery providers will only perform corneal topography.
Topography machines map only the front surface of the
cornea. Unlike the topography machines showing only
the front surface of the cornea, Orbscan shows
both front and back surface of the cornea. Some early
conditions of the cornea like Keratoconus (where laser
surgery is not advisable) show changes in the back surface
of the cornea, which is detected only by Orbscan.
The ability to evaluate the back surface of the cornea
allows your surgeon to better assess your cornea for
surgery. This is important for safety reasons. It also
shows changes in the whole cornea after the surgery
giving valuable information to the surgeon prior to
an enhancement.
This instrument also measures the thickness of the
cornea. Unlike the ultrasound machines, which measure
the thickness of the cornea only in the small area where
the "probe" touches, Orbscan measures
thickness in any part of the cornea.
