Monovision
Monovision is a treatment used to reduce dependency on reading glasses. In
a monovision treatment, one eye is fully corrected for distance vision and the
other eye is under corrected. The under corrected eye will be mildly nearsighted,
thus allowing the patient to see up close.
Distance vision in the under corrected eye is blurrier but the close up vision
is sharper. For patients over the age of 40, this may be an option to reading
glasses. Patients around the age of 55 are the most successful with a monovision
correction as the need for reading correction stabilizes around this time.
Monovision allows patients over the age of forty to read a label, tell time
on a watch, put on make up. Reading glasses may still be required for very fine
detailed near tasks, or for tasks taking a prolonged period of time.
Eventually, as we age, almost everyone needs reading glasses for up close tasks.
Monovision is not for everyone. Some people are unable to adjust to the imbalance
between the two eyes. Before considering a monovision correction, a trial period
in contact lenses of 3 or 4 weeks is advisable.
